New HIV preventative pill causes big debate This summer, the gay social networking app Grindr caught some criticism for asking in a user survey “What is your current HIV status? Given that this has not been a part of our profile options to date, we are surveying users to determine both their desire to share this information, and ways to prevent stigma and provide proper support,” the statement said.
He got the images from a colleague, he said, and called the filter a “digital quarantine. People already have the ability to disclose their status in their profile text, if they choose to do so. More harm than good? Although an HIV filter could have the benefit of letting HIV-positive people meet others — avoiding potentially awkward and stigmatizing conversations — it also could have a dark side: Eric Schrimshaw , associate professor of sociomedical sciences at Columbia University.
Some states have laws that mandate the disclosure of HIV status prior to any kind of sexual activity. But for some, a dating app filter could lead HIV-negative people to think that the filtered matches consist of only HIV-negative people, he said. From there, they might engage in unprotected sex. This could lead to HIV infections because “one, the potential partner might not be telling the truth in order to be able to get partners or to avoid stigma, and also the person may simply have engaged in behaviors recently that result in status change that they just don’t know yet.

Dating Someone with HIV
Many species are infected by lentiviruses, which are characteristically responsible for long-duration illnesses with a long incubation period. Upon entry into the target cell, the viral RNA genome is converted reverse transcribed into double-stranded DNA by a virally encoded enzyme, reverse transcriptase , that is transported along with the viral genome in the virus particle. The resulting viral DNA is then imported into the cell nucleus and integrated into the cellular DNA by a virally encoded enzyme, integrase , and host co-factors.
Alternatively, the integrated viral DNA may be transcribed , producing new RNA genomes and viral proteins, using host cell resources, that are packaged and released from the cell as new virus particles that will begin the replication cycle anew. Two types of HIV have been characterized: A matrix composed of the viral protein p17 surrounds the capsid ensuring the integrity of the virion particle.

He’s 70, almost 30 years older than me and we met on here and he called me tonight and were making plans for me to move out there so I can be with him for a long term relationship. We have been together for over a year strong now. As someone employed by the Minnesota AIDS Project it has definitely been a great resource for news and the personals have really helped me feel less alone.
As I know it has for many diagnosed with HIV. We are both happy as can be and it is really great with us both being positive and understanding the side effects and other issues that we have to put up with. Perhaps we would have never crossed paths without this infection. We may hear wedding bells in the near future. If you are aware of your HIV status, it can be a nerve-racking experience to let a new partner know if you are positive. Some people are completely upfront on their dating profiles, and in life generally. However, others feel very insecure about telling people.

The Partner study itself comes with a series of warnings about what exactly the study has really found about undetectable viral loads. While some of this could be used as cover by skeptics, it also means positive people are left to understand and explain all of this science to a world that continues to stigmatize and in some cases, criminalize anyone with HIV.

Why are the numbers so high? Lack of Awareness, and Distrust and Fear Many black people may be HIV-positive and not know it, so they continue to spread the virus while also getting sicker. Part of the problem may be a lingering distrust in the black community of government sources of information and research.
The historic Tuskegee Syphilis Study did harmful medical testing on African-Americans, without their knowledge, for 40 years. Stigma around homosexuality may also silence men who have sex with men. Black men “on the down low” have sex with men but may not tell their women sex partners. It’s less likely for a black man to get HIV from a woman. And it’s more likely for a black man than a white man to get HIV by having sex with men.

The degree of protection they offer against HIV and STIs is significantly better than any other single prevention method, taken in isolation, other than sexual abstinence or complete mutual monogamy between two people who have tested negative for HIV. Despite this, the use and promotion of condoms continue to be targets for controversy and criticism, and sexual abstinence and monogamy are often promoted as superior alternatives.
While condoms offer useful and vital protection, they have also become associated with promiscuity and infidelity. Brian I myself am a gay male. Some considerations that I “personally” have regarding gay men: I know I am sounding like Dr. I know what it is like sweating out several weeks to get tested after having sex with someone who may have had HIV. The one and only reported case seems shady to me, Anal fissures are also possibilities for gay men, and also not uncommon I wish the best for you, I know that I am now “overly” cautious.
Nontheless, everything after unprotected sex is based on “trust”, which honestly, for me, went out the window with gay men quite awhile ago! If he chooses not to show you written, verified results of being HIV-, I would personally be a little weary of this man. Written confirmation of the test results would be a lot more reassuring than the person’s word, particularly when you do not know them well.
As you say, trust is ultimately a big factor.
